FC Barcelona have been hard at work trying to extend the contracts of key players this year, having already announced deals for stars such as Gavi, Pedri, Ronald Araujo and many others.

The next player on their radar is Frenkie de Jong. Linked with a move away from Camp Nou not too long ago, the Dutchman has become one of the most important players for Barça this year.

Indeed, De Jong has re-established himself in the Barcelona midfield, building a solid partnership with Pedri.

De Jong ready to extend his contract

A recent report from The Athletic has offered a fresh update on De Jong’s future, suggesting that Barcelona are in talks with the midfielder over a new deal and that the player wishes to sign one.

De Jong’s current contract in Catalonia expires in 2026 and it appears Barcelona have no desire to start next season with any player who has less than a year left on his contract.

As per the report, Barcelona had sent De Jong’s camp a proposal to extend his contract at the start of 2024. But the camp maintained that they received no such offers.

Nevertheless, both sides have now restarted talks and while a breakthrough is still yet to be reached, de Jong is more than willing to continue at Barcelona.

The Dutchman feels settled in the city with his family. He also wants to play a key role at Barcelona, guiding an otherwise inexperienced team.

This could bode well for Barcelona, who will be desperate to tie De Jong down to a new contract, knowing there is always a risk of the midfielder leaving the club on a free transfer in 2026.

Despite De Jong’s ongoing form and relationship with Hansi Flick, his past tension with club officials cannot be ignored and could play a key role in negotiations.
