Transfer market specialist Fabrizio Romano has said that Julian Nagelsmann, a prime target for Barcelona’s managerial position, is now the frontrunner for the Bayern Munich job.

Nagelsmann is rated highly at Barcelona and has been linked with the club as a potential successor for Xavi at the end of the season. But, now, a return to Bayern Munich appears to be on the cards for him.

Romano disclosed that there have been initial discussions with Nagelsmann to gauge his interest, despite having an offer from the DFB (German Football Association).

Although the ultimate decision lies with Nagelsmann, he stands as the preferred candidate for Bayern’s board, overshadowing another potential candidate, Roberto De Zerbi, who is also being considered by Barcelona.

While De Zerbi remains under consideration, negotiations with him have not progressed significantly. There have been discussions with the Brighton manager, it is clear that Nagelsmann is the main focus of Bayern.

What’s going on at Barcelona?

Earlier today, we reported how Barcelona are now perceiving things with regard to the aforementioned matter.

With issues emerging thick and fast, the Blaugrana management has decided to look for solutions within the team, with the name Rafa Marquez gaining strength.

The German route, once full of promise, has hit a snag in recent weeks at Barcelona and only Hansi Flick remains in consideration due to his availability.

Efforts with De Zerbi have been slow-moving, as despite initial talks with Deco, his current contract and high buyout clause present significant hurdles.

Narrowing down the choices

Given this situation, if Xavi opts to continue, the hierarchy will support him. Club president Joan Laporta favours this idea, and if Xavi agrees, Laporta will back his decision.

However, if Xavi chooses to depart or if negotiations falter, the club has a backup plan in Marquez.

Marquez is seen as a viable option because of his familiarity with the younger players, adherence to the club’s culture, and positive relationships with the president and other decision-makers.

While other candidates may be considered, Marquez appears to be a reliable choice if Xavi’s tenure comes to an end.
