Barcelona were interested in signing Rennes midfielder Lovro Majer and made an inquiry for the Croatian international during the summer transfer window, reports Foot Mercato.

The 24-year-old arrived at Rennes only in the summer of 2021 and had an impressive debut season in France, finishing with six goals and eight assists from 29 Ligue 1 appearances.

It put him on the radars of clubs like Atletico Madrid, PSG and Sevilla during the summer transfer window. And it seems like Barcelona, too, had shown an interest in the 24-year-old midfielder.

The report states that the Blaugrana contacted Majer’s entourage in the middle of the transfer window and took information about his situation. However, given the club’s financial situation and salary limit problems, the interest faded with time.

Majer, for his part, is still continuing to perform impressively for Rennes, with Atletico Madrid still retaining an interest in the Croatian international, who has been likened to compatriot and Real Madrid icon, Luka Modric.

The French club, for their part, have slapped a massive price tag of €60 million on their midfielder, given that his contract runs until the summer of 2026.

As for Barcelona, while their interest in Majer seemingly faded after the initial enquiry, they did strengthen their midfield department with the acquisitions of Franck Kessie and Pablo Torre, although the duo has struggled to get a foothold into the first XI at Spotify Camp Nou.

Xavi has found his preferred midfield partnership in Pedri, Gavi and Sergio Busquets, with Frenkie de Jong, Kessie and Torre behind them in the pecking order.

So, at this point, there does not seem to be any need for a player like Majer at Barça currently. Instead, the club must focus on bringing in a replacement for captain Busquets, who looks set to leave at the end of the season.
