Free agents have played a key role in Barcelona’s policy in the transfer market in recent years. With the club dealing with an inflated wage structure, the ability to sign players for free has minimised the economic toll, to an extent, when it comes to signing new players.

But after spending fortunes in the market before the start of the season, a report from SPORT suggests Barcelona are set to rely on free agents once again in the summer of 2023.

The club identified two problem areas that need to be addressed: midfield and right-back. They are already weighing up a move for Naby Keita and Ilkay Gundogan, among a few others, in their quest to reinforce their options in the middle of the park.

As far as the right-back unit is concerned, Barcelona have a couple of targets in mind as well, including Diogo Dalot.

The Manchester United star has emerged as the top target for the club in 2023, due to his excellent performances in the Premier League. Dalot’s attacking prowess, combined with his athleticism has indeed made him a key player at Old Trafford this term.

However, what makes him such an appealing target for Barcelona is his current contract status. The defender’s current deal at Old Trafford expires at the end of the season, meaning he could be available as a free agent in 2023.

The same applies to Barcelona’s other top target in the right-back position, in the form of Wilfried Singo. Much like Dalot, the Torino defender has been a consistent performer in Serie A and has showcased immense promise in recent years.

Singo offers the athleticism and pace that could make him a tailor-made fit for Xavi’s side. His contract in Turin expires in 2023 as well, meaning he could be an excellent alternative for Barcelona, should they miss out on the pursuit of Dalot next year.

It must be noted that Manchester United have an option to extend Dalot’s contract to one more year, while the same holds true for Torino and Singo as well. It could make it difficult for Barça to obtain their services, although they would likely be still available for a relatively cheaper price.
