During this time last season, Barcelona were fresh off a La Liga victory, reaping the fruits of their labour.

However, as we fast forward to this season, that feeling of elation has given way to a sense of dread among the Catalan giants.

Indeed, Barça are on course to end the season with no silverware to boast of, as their primary motive is to secure a position inside the top two of La Liga.

Understandably, finding the motivation to continue competing at an elite level in the current context is proving to be quite demanding.

Barcelona in low spirits

Now, SPORT has come out to shed light on the gloomy atmosphere in the Barcelona dressing room as the club is going through a period of emotional downturn.

Faced with disappointment and mental fatigue, the team acknowledges that even securing second place would not dispel the sense of failure.

Given that the possibility of winning any titles is ruled out, the Barcelona players are aware that winning their final four games will not change the evaluation of their season as a whole.

“Let this end now…,” say the staff.

To that end, the focus has now turned to the upcoming season. The rumour brigade has not made life easy for the Barcelona players either, with many players caught in the eye of the storm.

Barcelona’s financial situation compels them to deem a large chunk of their roster transferable, and only a few are safe from the swinging axe.

Players are thus experiencing pressure to leave the club and personal scrutiny amid this uncertainty, which is hardly a beneficial environment.

Tensions are rising

A short-lived boost to morale was provided by February’s improved performances as Barça began to dream of Champions League glory. But losses to PSG and Real Madrid, along with player disputes, have destroyed the team’s unity.

President Joan Laporta’s outburst after the defeat to Girona serves as an example of the escalating tensions, while reports have mentioned that Xavi had to intervene to cool down some disputes.

Now, the game against Real Sociedad is seen as a means to achieve a temporary respite, as a win would put the team back in second place after Girona’s draw last night.

A loss, on the other hand, could compound those problems and ignite tensions even further.
