Puyol has held a senior position at Barça before – working alongside director of football Andoni Zubizarreta in 2014 – but departed following their FIFA-imposed transfer ban in 2015.

The club have made an effort to appoint former players in senior roles, hoping to improve the connection between fans and executives.

Eric Abidal is currently the technical secretary, ex-striker Patrick Kluivert continues to oversee La Masia and former goalkeeper Victor Valdes coaches at youth level.
