Barcelona have unexpectedly entered the race to sign 22-year-old striker Alex Costa, currently playing for SD Ponferradina.
This sudden interest, as reported by SPORT, has thrown a wrench into Sevilla’s efforts, who were all set to finalise the player’s signing for their B team, Sevilla Atlético.
Costa impressed during the 2024/25 season in Spain’s third division, scoring 8 goals and providing 3 assists in 31 games.
Until this week, Sevilla had been working quietly and efficiently to secure his transfer and had even completed a medical test with the player.
Reports suggested that a deal was fully agreed, and Costa was ready to sign a three-year contract with the La Liga side.
However, things changed earlier this week when Barcelona reached out to SD Ponferradina, who still have the striker under contract until June 2027.
According to multiple sources, this unexpected move made Costa hesitate and re-evaluate his options.
Even though the agreement with Sevilla seemed to be done, some final paperwork was still pending. That delay gave Barça just enough time to make a late approach.
Despite Barcelona’s attempt to hijack the deal, reports from Costa’s close circle suggest he remains committed to joining Sevilla.
While some outlets claim the Barça interest made him question his next step, others say the forward is focused on earning a future with Sevilla’s first team.
In fact, Costa’s entourage have reassured Sevilla officials of his commitment. Although Barcelona’s interest came at the last moment, it seems unlikely to change the outcome of the transfer.
Unless there is another dramatic twist, Costa is expected to sign his deal with Sevilla in the coming hours.
