According to Ferran Martinez of Mundo Deportivo, Barcelona are planning to activate the two-year contract extension option on young goalkeeper Arnau Tenas, although they are yet to communicate the decision to the player.

Tenas, 21, is currently the captain of Barça Atletic while he serves as the third-choice goalkeeper with the first team, behind Marc-Andre ter Stegen and Inaki Pena.

The La Masia graduate’s current contract with the club expires at the end of the season, but Barcelona retain the option of unilaterally extending it by two more years, which would keep him tied down at Camp Nou until the summer of 2025.

And the idea is for Barcelona to do just that.

Like Tenas, Pena’s contract also expires on June 30 later this year. Talks over a renewal had been progressing well, but the 24-year-old has seemingly now decided that he wants out in search of regular game-time.

While Barça hope to convince him to stay for one more season at least, in the scenario that Pena leaves, the plan would be for Tenas to be promoted to the second-choice goalkeeper’s position.

The 21-year-old is known for his agility, reflexes, and footwork and is seen as someone who fits the Barcelona mould perfectly while possessing a very high ceiling.

There will be conversations held about his future, as to whether he continues with the first team or is loaned out for the next season, especially if Pena decides to renew.

Tenas, for his part, is very happy at Barcelona and loves the club. The young custodian is willing to wait for his opportunity to arrive. For now, the Catalans’ sports management intends to trigger the two-year extension option.
