The decline in quality in Real Madrid’s midfield has been conspicuous and alarming over the years.
From boasting of one of the most stable midfield in Toni Kroos, Luka Modric, and Casemiro, the Galacticos are now reduced to a minuscule presence in the middle of the park with no creative ball-player and no ideal box-to-box midfield profile.
The only remaining member of the former world-conquering midfield is Luka Modric but the veteran has played a very limited role for the team so far this season. Yet, he has been their most influential player in the department in terms of playmaking.
Speaking to MARCA in a recent interaction, Barcelona legend Ivan Rakitic urged Florentino Perez to renew his compatriot’s contract soon and tie him down to the Spanish capital.
“Hopefully Florentino Perez will listen to me very carefully… Florentino, renew him already! Renew him not only for the Madridistas but for all of us who love football.”
“Luka is one of the few who is loved by everyone, the Croats, the Spaniards, the Germans, the Turks,” he added on Modric.

Rakitic then spoke on the importance the player holds for Real Madrid’s plans and how the veteran is still cut out to perform at the highest level.
“[If he leaves] Real Madrid will miss him, La Liga will miss him. He has to keep playing in the Champions League and I hope he’ll play in the World Cup next year.”
“The age doesn’t matter. I hope we will continue to enjoy him,” he added on Modric’s timeless magic.
If recent reports are to be believed, the club is not considering offering him a new contract. A lot will depend on his contribution in the second half of the ongoing campaign.
