Barcelona are working to finalise a new contract for Eric Garcia, aiming to tie him down until 2029 or 2030 before the summer transfer window closes, claims a report from SPORT.
It is to be noted that the 24-year-old has become an important figure in Hansi Flick’s plans, even more so following Inigo Martinez’s surprise move to Saudi Arabia earlier this month.
Flick has shown strong faith in Garcia, starting him at right-back ahead of Jules Kounde during the Joan Gamper Trophy. The Barcelona coach sees him as the squad’s ultimate utility player this season, capable of filling multiple roles.
It is said that club officials had indicated during the pre-season tour that a renewal was virtually agreed and would be signed upon Garcia’s return from Korea.
However, the deal is not yet complete, with the hope that both sides can reach an agreement before the transfer window shuts.
Garcia’s current deal runs until 2026, but Flick has personally requested an extension, having already stopped his departure in January.

The plan is to secure his long-term future alongside fellow defender Andreas Christensen, whose contract is also due to expire in a year.
Talks between Barça and Garcia’s representatives have been progressing since early August. However, the final meeting to seal the agreement has been delayed due to scheduling issues.
Sporting director Deco, currently in Brazil for personal reasons, has paused several pending matters, including Garcia’s contract.
Garcia remains patient, awaiting the decisive talks that will confirm his future. He is not the only player waiting, as Oriol Romeu is also expecting discussions over a contract termination, while Jules Kounde is due to sign his updated terms once Deco returns.
For now, Barcelona’s aim is to secure Garcia’s services for the long term and for that, everything seems to be on track.
