Barcelona have reached an agreement with Manchester City captain and midfielder Ilkay Gundogan to sign him as a free agent in the summer, reports Gerard Romero.

Gundogan has been on Barcelona’s radar for some time now, given his contract with the Premier League champions expires at the end of the season.

Manager Xavi Hernandez was reported to have already spoken with the German international over a possible transfer in the summer, while it was also claimed that the midfielder himself is tempted by the possibility of donning the Blaugrana colours.

Now, Romero is stating that an agreement is already in place between Barcelona and Gundogan over a free transfer at the end of the season.

This development comes after Romero reported that Barcelona had reached a total agreement with Inigo Martinez and his signing was as good as complete. He also mentioned that there was a special clause in the deal between the two parties, which would allow Martinez to leave on loan if the Catalans are unable to register him.

Given that the Catalans’ hands are tied with Financial Fair Play, they are looking for free transfer options in the market.

It compelled them to move for Martinez and Gundogan, although their registrations cannot be guaranteed at this point. Hence, they are insisting on a clause that would allow the players to leave on loan if their registration is not complete.

But, Romero adds Gundogan is yet to accept such a clause in his deal, wherein he can leave on loan if his registration is unsuccessful. That is the one key detail missing in the agreement as per the journalist.

The 32-year-old has been with Manchester City for close to seven seasons and would bring that experience and winning mentality to the table at Barcelona, along with his ability to play as an interior or a pivot. Over the next few weeks, it should become clear if the veteran will indeed by arriving in Catalonia.
