Barcelona are spending almost €100m more on wages than any other club in Europe.

Business expert Swiss Ramble has delved into Barcelona’s latest financial reports and come out the other side with some pretty interesting findings.

Last season, the LaLiga champions had a €487m wage bill – €92m more than Spanish rivals Real Madrid.

It should, then, be considered a huge disappointment that the Blaugrauna failed to advance beyond the Champions League quarter-finals for the third year in succession.

Lionel Messi signed a new contract at Camp Nou in November 2017, making him the highest paid player in the world. The deal is worth a reported €2-a-week.

In comparison to Barcelona, the Premier League clubs lag behind, though only the two Manchester clubs have published their financial results from last season.

Most worryingly for Barcelona, an enormous amount of the money that goes into the club goes on the wage bill. The Catalan giants spent 70% of their turnover on wages in the 2017/18 season – the third highest rate in LaLiga.

By way of comparison, Real Madrid’s 53% was the fourth best in the league and was posted before the sale of Cristiano Ronaldo.

One thing’s for sure moving forward: Barcelona really need to manage their wage bill better.
