After having signed Joan Garcia for the goalkeeping position by activating his €25 million release clause, FC Barcelona are now looking to reinforce their attack by bringing in a new left winger. For this purpose, the Blaugranes are being closely linked with the Athletic Club winger Nico Williams, with whom they have reportedly already reached a personal agreement.
As was the case with Joan Garcia, the Catalans might again have to get their target by paying his release clause, which stands at €58 million.
In this regard, Mundo Deportivo reports that Barcelona will not pay this release clause till the start of July, and this decision is shaped by some financial considerations.
The Catalans want to charge this amount of €58 million and the involved CPI in the accounts for the next accounting year, i.e., 2025-26, which will start on 1st July.
However, despite their decision to delay the payment of the release clause, the Blaugranes intend to finalize all the details of Nico’s signing before the winger has to report back to Athletic Club for pre-season training, which is set to begin in the second week of July.
Barcelona want the winger to start the next pre-season training under Hansi Flick. The Blaugranes’ pre-season training is set to start on 13th July, but Nico Williams, if he joins, will start training at a later date as he had to play in the UEFA Nations League and started his vacations late.
As things stand, the Spanish forward’s entourage is in talks with Athletic Club to facilitate his move by allowing Barcelona to pay his release clause in instalments. Last year, Nico had decided to stay at the Basque club, and the club might repay him for that gesture by facilitating his desired move to the Blaugrana club.
Still, keeping in view the rocky relationship between the two clubs, it is unlikely that an agreement will be reached in this regard. However, Barcelona are prepared to pay the full release clause for Nico Williams, while they continue to work to free up wages to get him registered.
