Barcelona have 55 days to sign target before €60m release clause disappears

Barcelona will look to sign a new left winger in the summer, and several names have been linked in recent weeks. Nico Williams is a leading candidate, Real Betis’ Ayoze Perez would be a more economically-viable option, while Dani Olmo is also said to be on the shortlist that is being drawn up by sporting director Deco.

Olmo is well-regarded at Barcelona, where he was part of La Masia until 2015. A return could be orchestrated during the upcoming transfer window, although there is a race against time to get things wrapped up – that’s because Marca have reported that the 26-year-old’s €60m release clause is only temporary.

Any clubs interested in signing Olmo this summer has until the 15th of July to trigger the release clause. If no one does so, it disappears and Leipzig can then dictate the asking price – which would be significantly higher than €60m.

A deal for Olmo would be extremely unlikely anyway for Barcelona because of the asking price, as they simply cannot afford to splash out that amount – especially with a one-off payment. It’s expected that other options will be considered instead.
