The powers that be at La Liga giants Barcelona had set aside the club’s famed no.10 jersey for a headline figure on the club’s summer transfer wishlist.
That’s according to Diario Sport, who point towards Nico Williams as the player in question.
The name of wide-man Williams, of course, took its place front and centre in the media headlines through the recently-closed transfer window.
This came with the 22-year-old’s continued excellence for club and country alike having sparked widespread interest in his signature.
Barcelona, for one, pushed hard to bring Nico in for much of the summer, eager to unite the Spanish international with close friend Lamine Yamal.
In the end, however, the transfer deadline came and went with the player still in Bilbao.
If the latest word stemming from the media this week is anything to go by, though, then it would appear that the Barca brass, at one point at least, were altogether confident of getting a deal for Nico done.
As per a report from the aforementioned Diario Sport, the Blaugrana went as far as to put aside Ansu Fati’s no.10 shirt, ready to hand as much to Athletic Club’s star man for the season ahead.
Significantly, it is also noted that the plan in Catalunya’s capital remains to return for Williams’ signature next summer.
