Barcelona have been dealt with their first major casualty in the ongoing European Championship.

Pedri, who has been extremely unlucky with injuries in recent past, was the subject of a rash challenge from Toni Kroos in the early stages of Spain’s quarterfinal tie against Germany.

The challenge impacted the left knee of Pedri, who tried to continue but was ultimately subbed off. He was replaced by Dani Olmo in the eighth minute of the game, with the midfielder failing to hold back his tears after returning to the bench.

How long will Pedri be out for?

Pedri’s fresh injury could be a major blow for Barcelona, who are gearing up for the start of the pre-season campaign under new coach Hansi Flick.

A recent report from Diario SPORT has offered an update on Pedri’s fitness, suggesting that the midfielder could be sidelined for a period of around six weeks.

A lot depends on the extent of his ankle knock. Normally, these types of injuries do not require surgery, meaning it is unlikely that Pedri will be sidelined for a long period of time.

If the severity of the injury is mild, Pedri could be ruled out for a period of around two to six weeks.

In the worst-case scenario, if Pedri’s injury proves to be serious, the midfielder may have to spend up to eight weeks on the sidelines.

Why Barcelona should be worried

While Barcelona will certainly miss the presence of Pedri during the pre-season campaign, there is a bigger trend the club must be worried about – the mental health of Pedri.

Since 2021, Pedri has battled recurring injuries, a struggle evident in his emotional reaction returning to the bench in tears.

The constant battle with injuries can be incredibly frustrating and demoralizing for any player, but especially for a young talent like Pedri.

Barcelona, therefore, will need to carefully manage his recovery process, not just physically but also mentally, to ensure he returns with confidence.
