If Gavi’s ACL injury was not enough, Barcelona were dealt with another blow this week as Marc-Andre ter Stegen picked up a knock during the international break.

While the German’s back problem is not considered too serious, he still remains a doubt as Barcelona look to resume their campaign this weekend.

Ter Stegen: A doubt vs Rayo Vallecano

Barcelona restart their campaign with a Saturday afternoon game against Rayo Vallecano, in what could prove to be a must-win game for the Catalans.

However, as we approach this game, Barça could be without the services of ter Stegen, reports Mundo Deportivo.

The Spanish news publication suggests that the German shot-stopper did not train with the team on Tuesday. As such, he remains a doubt to play against Vallecano this weekend.

A final decision will be taken on Thursday. If ter Stegen’s condition improves, he could become a part of the squad this weekend.

Barcelona, for their part, would be desperate to have ter Stegen back for the weekend, knowing they have key matchups against Porto, Atletico Madrid and Girona coming up next week.

Inaki Pena ready to replace ter Stegen

The report further points out that Inaki Pena is lined up to replace ter Stegen, in case he fails to make the squad against Vallecano.

Barcelona have full faith in the Spaniard, who has struggled for minutes despite signing a contract extension earlier in the year.

If ter Stegen misses out, Pena could, in fact, be poised to make his first competitive appearance of the season.

Pena, therefore, has enough reasons not to be happy with Barcelona. But it is imperative that he takes full advantage of any chances that he receives this weekend.
