La Liga giants Barcelona have secured a contract agreement with a long-time member of the club’s first-team ranks.

That’s according to Mundo Deportivo, who point towards Sergi Roberto as the player in question.

It is of course common knowledge that negotiations to extend midfielder Roberto’s expiring terms in Catalunya’s capital had been underway for several weeks now.

Despite backlash across sections of the Barcelona fanbase, Xavi and his coaching staff made clear their desire for Roberto to stay put, owing in large part to his influence in the dressing room.

The player, for his part, is equally eager to remain, with an agreement having, at first, therefore been considered something of a foregone conclusion.

And yet, amid negotiations between the parties, one hiccup did come to the fore.

As much came owing to a disagreement regarding the length of the contract on the table.

Barcelona made clear that they were only willing to offer up the terms of a basic one-year extension to Roberto and his entourage.

The versatile midfielder, on the other hand, sought out the inclusion of an option for a 2nd season, based on appearances over the course of the 2024/25 campaign.

As alluded to above, though, if the latest word stemming from the media on Thursday is anything to go by, the former have this week won out.

As per the aforementioned MD:

‘The renewal of Sergi Roberto (32) has already been agreed. The Barça captain, who ends his contractual relationship in June 2024, will sign for a single season without any option for matches played, as club sources have told MD.’
