Barcelona striker Vitor Roque could be set for an emotional return to Brazil this month amid serious interest from Palmeiras.
Roque is currently on loan at Real Betis, but Palmeiras are reportedly actively working on luring him back to Brazil.
However, Betis and Barca must negotiate the termination of his loan, which could throw a wrench in Palmeiras’ plans.
The Basque club has an option to make Roque’s transfer permanent for €25 million, which comes with 80% of his rights and other add-ons.
Barca also gave themselves some measure of control over the Brazilian’s future by inserting a buy-back clause worth €27.5m, but that only comes into play if Betis activates their purchase option.
While Palmeiras are keen, there are concerns that Betis could make things even more complicated by demanding a compensation fee to release Roque early.
Breaking the loan agreement prematurely could disrupt the Spanish club’s plans as they push for a top-half finish.
If Palmeiras can’t land Roque’s signature this month, they’re likely to reignite their interest in the summer, with the club determined to have him in their squad for the Club World Cup.
Roque is still determined to prove he can handle the pressure of playing in Europe, but he hasn’t exactly sparkled in Betis colours.
He has managed seven goals and two assists in 30 games across all competitions and is currently on a four-match goal drought.
He hasn’t scored since bagging a consolation penalty for Betis in the 5-1 Copa Del Rey last 16 thrashing against his parent club.
You’d also have to go back to mid-December for the last time he scored a La Liga goal, opening the scoring as Betis edged Villarreal 2-1.
