Barcelona recently confirmed officially that they have extended the contract of veteran defender Marcos Alonso.

The 32-year-old left-back joined Barcelona only last summer, arriving on a Bosman deal. Given the Blaugrana’s financial difficulties at the time, Alonso accepted only a one-year contract on reduced wages.

Barcelona had given Alonso their word that he would be renewed in the second half of the campaign and they have done exactly that. The Spaniard has penned a new one-year contract with the option of an additional year.

While the contract extension might have been officially announced, Barça are unable to register the same with La Liga yet, reports Adria Soldevila.

The Catalans’ issues with the Financial Fair Play regulations are not unknown. It has prohibited them from signing any new player in the ongoing January transfer window, while La Liga also rejected their attempt to register Gavi’s new first-team contract.

The league believes Barcelona will exceed their salary limit in the summer and as a result, had stopped the registration of Gavi’s first-team deal.

And, according to the aforementioned report, for the same reason, La Liga has now blocked Alonso’s contract registration as well.

Previously, it has been suggested that Barcelona will need to shed around €150-200 million off their wage bill in order to receive the green light from La Liga to carry out any new operations, be it signings or registrations.

While Alonso might have renewed, if the new deal is unregistered, it opens up an issue for the club as his current contract that is registered with La Liga stands to expire at the end of the season.

So, Barcelona will need to find ways to create enough Fair Play margin before the summer to find ways to register the contract of Alonso, as well as Gavi and Ronald Araujo, while also complete the renewals of Inaki Pena and Alejandro Balde.
