In a recent report, El Gol Digital has revealed that Barcelona are facing competition from Real Madrid in pursuit of Red Bull Leipzig playmaker Dani Olmo. However, it is believed that the Catalans could find it difficult to fund a move to bring the Spanish attacker back to the Nou Camp during this summer transfer period (via El Gol Digital).

Olmo’s Decent Run Of Form At The Red Bull Arena This Season

The former Dinamo Zagreb talent is having another productive season in Germany because he has put in some excellent displays as an important member of Julian Nagelsmann’s frontline. Olmo has registered five goals and 11 assists in 41 matches for the German giants this term in various competitions.

The 22-year-old has caught the eye by averaging 2.3 shots, 1.3 key passes and 1.0 dribbles per game in this Bundesliga campaign. The Spaniard has even distributed the ball relatively well in the final third, as evidenced by his pass completion rate of 77.4% in the Spanish top tier (stats via whoscored).

Olmo’s current Leipzig contract is set to expire in the summer of 2024, so Nagelsmann will understandably be reluctant to let him go on the cheap which would make it tough for Barca to compete for his services this summer.

Is Olmo Worth The Fight?

Olmo is an exciting dribbler with the ball in the opposition half and has got the rare ability to unlock the opposition defence with a killer pass in the attacking third. He is also not shy of having a shot at goal when afforded time and space by his marker but needs to add a few more goals to his name if he intends to take his game to another level.

Someone as talented as Olmo will be well-worth the fight if Barca had the funds to pull off such a move. However, in reality, the COVID-19 crisis has taken its toll on the Catalan club’s finances so it is unlikely that they would be able to compete with other big clubs in the race to land the Spanish attacking midfielder in this off-season.

At 22, Olmo is a player on the rise and could potentially become a world-class player at his position someday. Therefore, Barca boss Ronald Koeman should keep tabs on his progress over the next few years even if he doesn’t have the resources to bring him back to the Nou Camp this summer as he is still young and could be a more realistic option for the Catalans in the future.
