After signing only one major player in the summer transfer window, FC Barcelona remains active behind the scenes, looking at players who can improve the team in the long run.
At the same time, Barcelona are also looking to retain the core of the team, focusing on securing the future of their key players.
As sporting director Deco emphasized in a recent interview, the club’s philosophy is to build on its current squad rather than dismantle it.
As reported by Mundo Deportivo, Barcelona have already identified five players whose contract must be extended in the near future.
The five players in question are Pedri, Marc Bernal, Frenkie de Jong, Ronald Araujo and Fermin Lopez.
Marc Bernal, despite suffering a serious knee injury that will keep him out for the next 12 months, is the closest to finalizing his renewal.
The 17-year-old is set to sign a new first-team contract with an improved salary. Although his contract, which expires in 2026, will include three optional years, regulations prevent it from exceeding three years until he turns 18.

Talks with Pedri are also underway. The midfielder, who turned 22 in November, has been a key figure under coach Hansi Flick. Pedri’s current contract runs until 2026, but the club aims to extend his stay further.
Similarly, Fermin Lopez, who recently won Olympic gold, has impressed this season. His agent met with Deco in August, with plans to extend his contract until 2029 with a salary increase and better performance bonuses.
However, the situation is more complex with Ronald Araujo and Frenkie de Jong, whose contracts also expire in 2026.
Negotiations with Araujo have yet to progress despite the club’s efforts, while De Jong, still recovering from an ankle injury, received an offer from Barcelona last November.
Both players remain integral to the squad, but with no renewals in sight, the club could face tough decisions in the coming seasons.
Not to mention, both players can still attract a solid price in the transfer market. Therefore, their potential contract extension might not necessarily guarantee their long-term future in Catalonia.
