Barcelona are still pursuing a move for Ajax midfielder Frankie de Jong.

The Catalan giants have targeted the 21-year-old as the long-term replacement for Sergio Busquets in the centre of the park at Camp Nou.

De Jong, who started his career with Willem II, has even slotted into defence for the Dutch club this pre-season and clearly has a big future in the game.

And according to Sport, Barcelona want to sign him this summer as a player for the future.

Ajax sporting director Marc Overmars has reiterated the club’s stance over their young stars but it has so far not deterred Barca. Speaking recently about De Jong, Donny van de Beek and Matthijs de Ligt, he insisted: “They are not for sale and I have said that to the interested clubs.

“Let them come back next year. Allow them to play 40 games for Ajax this season. They won’t be leaving even for ridiculous money.”
