FC Barcelona are no stranger to having a German goalkeeper guarding their post for a long time. Current club captain Marc-Andre Ter Stegen has been at the Catalan club since 2014 and is the main goalkeeper of the current squad.
However, the German international is currently 32 years old and is out with a serious, long-term injury with no one clear on how well the player can recover and regain his former self. Additionally, as players age, it has been seen that they struggle to reach their previous heights after a long injury layoff.
In his absence, Hansi Flick & co. have decided to place their trust in La Masia graduate Inaki Pena, who has done an excellent job so far. The best thing about this Spaniard so far has been his willingness to learn and improve, which is visible with each passing game.
Despite this, it looks like Barcelona are keen on bolstering the goalkeeping department for the future, and as per Fichajes, they have set their sights on 20-year-old German shot-stopper Mio Backhaus who plays for Bundesliga side Werder Bremen.
The young German goalkeeper has already been linked to the transfer to Barcelona in the past following his impressive performances in the Dutch top flight last season where he was awarded the best shot-stopper accolade.
Barcelona view Backhaus as a player who perfectly suits their system and what Hansi Flick expects out of a goalkeeper. The 20-year-old is already a reliable shot-stopper and most importantly is very comfortable with the ball at his feet.
Having represented Germany at all the youth levels so far, if he continues his development, it is only a matter of time before he gets his first cap for the international team. If he moves to Barcelona, it will only help him improve even more, learning from the likes of Ter Stegen.
Signing Backhaus would be a solid piece of business from the Catalan club. It might take a few years and maybe a couple of loan spells to get regular game time under his belt before he is ready to represent a club as big as Barcelona and let’s wait and see how this transfer saga pans out.
