The financial situation of FC Barcelona is one that has been well-documented over the last few years. Following the presidency of Josep Maria Bartomeu, the club was left in a vulnerable state where a lot of difficulties were beginning to creep through. Fortunately, Barcelona have made some great progress since then.

While it has come at the cost of certain sacrifices having to be made, the club is still well and truly alive and kicking. Beyond just repairing their broken financial structure, the Catalan giants are once again seen as top contenders on the world stage as well.

In fact, La Blaugrana have revitalized their own image and they are now once again a team that almost every player in the world would like to join. With the way the Nico Williams operation is going, it is clear to see the strength that Barcelona now possesses again, and aspects like positive shirt sales also only further add to this recovery.

Moreover, the club’s financial recovery may yield even more rewards for them as time goes on. According to the latest update from SPORT, La Liga President Javier Tebas has even allegedly informed Barcelona President Joan Laporta that the club will indeed be returning to the 1:1 rule soon.

For context, returning to this rule would mean that every single unit of currency that the club generates will be accessible in terms of expenditure as well. As an example, if a player is sold for €10 million, that amount can then roughly be directly allocated towards another transfer operation.

While the true intricacies of the rule are far more complicated than that, it is still the basic idea of why it is so important to return to it. Over the last few years, Barcelona has only temporarily returned under the 1:1 rule but has mostly had to operate with some unfavorable restrictions applied to them.

A big step forward

For that reason, this is a massive step forward for La Blaugrana as they look to compete properly in the transfer market. If they are able to return to this 1:1 rule, it would ease the pressure of registering new contract renewals as well as registering new signings such as Joan Garcia.

Interestingly, a major reason as to why Barcelona have been able to come so close to making this objective of theirs a reality is thanks to the positive look of their financial year 2024-25. With Joan Laporta announcing €950 million in revenue, an amount that exceeds the €893 million that was originally budgeted, Barça has made some great progress.

This was primarily made possible due to Barça’s auditing firm, Crowe, recognizing the €100 million that they earned from a 30-year deal connected to the new VIP seats at the Spotify Camp Nou as revenue for the club. Previously, this was not recognized as revenue by the firm during the mid-season financial report due to the seats still being under construction.

Fortunately, Turkish construction company Limak delivered on their deal to have those seats completed soon and the club can now have the firm officially recognize that incoming amount as revenue. While the club’s accounts still need to be audited, the report states that it is only a matter of days before La Liga officially confirms Barça’s return to the 1:1 rule.
