In recent months, it has been reported that FC Barcelona will be looking to make some new signings. This ongoing summer transfer window gives the Catalan club a clear opportunity to take a significant step forward. However, it must be remembered that Barcelona have recently been heavily limited by their finances as well.

Fortunately for the Catalan club, this summer will likely not be like the ones that have preceded it. That is because it is expected that Barcelona will have much more freedom to operate within this particular transfer window. Regardless, it is still important for them to evaluate their transfer options carefully to avoid excessive spending.

While Nico Williams is undoubtedly the man to follow for Barcelona, and he is also someone who the club is going all-out for, the Athletic Club star would still be an expensive arrival. His release clause of €58 million is already a steep amount for Barcelona to match, and his wages will be significant as well.

However, that is why Barcelona are reportedly keeping tabs on a certain Uruguayan winger as an alternative option. Maximiliano Araujo, aged 24, is a winger who has been linked to Barça recently. Moreover, it would now appear that the Catalan club is ready to take the next step to follow him.

According to SPORT, Barcelona director Deco has already requested the club’s scouts to follow the player closely and provide him with detailed reports on him. However, Barcelona will not be the only team involved in this hunt, as Atletico Madrid are reportedly also gathering intel on the player.

The winger, who currently plays for Mexican club Toluca FC, is impressing at the Copa American at the moment as well. While Nico Williams is exploding in the Euros, Barça’s alternative to him is ensuring that he does the same over in his native continent.

Furthermore, his signing would be seen as a very cost-effective one for FC Barcelona. Even though he already has a cheap release clause set at €20 million, the report suggests that Toluca may be willing to negotiate and agree over an amount even below that for his transfer. For Barcelona, in many ways, Araujo presents himself as the most economically viable option on the wing.
