Barcelona director of football Deco has confirmed that the club considered signing Manchester United loanee Marcus Rashford in the January transfer window.
Rashford was linked with various clubs during the January transfer window, including Barcelona, Juventus, AC Milan and Borussia Dortmund.
The 27-year-old, described as ‘unstoppable’ by United’s former manager Erik ten Hag, preferred a move to the Blaugrana, but they could not afford to pay his hefty wages.
Barcelona needed to offload players to sign Rashford. The club’s attempt to move on defender Eric Garcia and forward Ansu Fati failed.
In a recent interview, Deco revealed that while Barcelona were interested in Rashford, they were not desperate to sign him because they had other priorities.
He told Sport (Page 2-3 – February 13) via Press Reader: “The winter market is always tricky.
“It is true that in the past, there were important moments for Barca, such as the arrival of (Edgar) Davids, but there are no Davids available on the market today.
“It’s difficult because the good players, the ones who can contribute, are not available.
“It’s true that there was talk about Rashford, that he could have come, but we weren’t desperately looking for a player either.
“We were recovering players, and others were going to reach their best version.”
The England international eventually joined Aston Villa before deadline day but could still secure his dream move to Barcelona in the summer.
He needs to break into the Villa starting line-up and produce a string of consistent performances together to attract the interest of the Spanish giants.
Villa have an option to buy him, but the United academy graduate may be unable to reject another advance from Barca.
The La Liga giants will reinforce their squad in the summer and could make another move to sign Rashford if he impresses at Villa.
