The future of Athletic Club and Spain winger Nico Williams, amid serious interest from FC Barcelona, has been dominating the rumour mill in recent days.

The 22-year-old is wanted not only by Barcelona but also PSG while Athletic Club are eager to retain him at least for another season as well.

The Blaugrana, for their part, have made Nico a priority target and are eagerly waiting for a response from the winger after tabling a contract proposal, so that they can activate his €58 million release clause as soon as he gives the OK.

Nico to stay at Athletic Club

However, now, according to journalist Daniel Sobis, pending further confirmation, Nico Williams will remain at Athletic Club player for the 2024/25 season, which if true, potentially ends Barcelona’s hopes of signing the 22-year-old.

This past Sunday reports suggested that Nico had made a promise to his brother, Inaki Williams, to European football together for at least one season at Athletic Club.

And with the Basque club playing in the UEFA Europa League next season and the final set to take place at San Mames, there was always a possibility that Williams ended up staying put.

Now, it is being claimed that Nico has indeed decided to continue with Athletic Club, meaning a move to Barcelona might now be off.

No confirmation yet

However, Gerard Romero claimed that Nico has still not made a decision and that Barcelona are waiting to hear from him.

Meanwhile, Toni Juanmarti is stating that those close to Nico are yet to confirm this decision but are not denying the report that he is staying at Athletic Club.

Either way, a concrete confirmation about Nico’s decision might not be far away.
