There are certain objectives that FC Barcelona must tend to that have a place away from the pitch. While the sporting objectives on the field are crucial, they are made possible by work that is done away from it as well. For that reason, Barcelona are continuously working on such matters.

This includes contractual talks and negotiations as well for the Catalan club. So far this season, Barça has already showcased just how much attention and effort they wish to devote towards such concerns. By even prioritizing player renewals over signings at one point, the message was clear enough.

However, now that several key contracts have been sorted out and dealt with, there are a few more negotiations yet to be resolved. One such negotiation involves reaching an agreement with Dutch midfielder Frenkie de Jong over a potential new contract for him that would extend his stay beyond 2026.

Interestingly, however, SPORT reports that a new deal between the two parties could also include a potential new release clause. Reportedly, Barcelona would be open to putting in a €80 million release clause in De Jong’s contract, and they believe it to be an understandable value.

That is because, similar to how they added a release clause into Ronald Araujo’s new contract, Barcelona wish to apply some financial changes while also giving the player a way out in the future if they need it. Moreover, Barcelona wish to put more emphasis on the player’s performances as well.

To reflect that better, the club hopes to reevaluate the player’s contract in a way that would allow him to earn the same as he does in his current contract but through performance-based bonuses instead of a guaranteed salary. At the moment, the report suggests that he earns around €19 million per season.

However, the club does wish to align his salary with the others in the squad right now. Furthermore, they hope to completely take away the deferred payments that were agreed upon during the tenure of former Barcelona president Josep Maria Bartomeu.

The club has reportedly already sent an offer to the player, and this update suggests that talks are ongoing to reach a positive conclusion. It seems now that an agreement is much more possible than it seemed previously, and that is good news in itself.

So far this season, it has been clear enough to see that the 27-year-old midfielder has established himself as one of the key pieces of Hansi Flick’s team. Alongside Pedri, he is seen as the ideal midfield partner for the Spaniard under the guidance of the German coach, and it hardly comes as a surprise to see his resurgence aligning with Barcelona playing incredibly well in 2025 so far.
