Certain operations are useful for Barcelona even if the club is not directly involved in negotiations. That is because of special cases like sell-on clauses or percentages that can be attached to specific operations. Barcelona have used such measures in the past, and they can be rather lucrative if settled correctly.
Right now, there is a former Barcelona player who currently represents Ligue 1 side Stade Rennais and have an active sell-on clause attached to his deal. Mikayil Faye, a 20-year-old Senegalese defender who was signed by Rennes for €10.5 million and with Barça maintaining an additional 30% sell-on clause if the French side decided to sell him in the future.
Now, as per SPORT, German side Bayer Leverkusen is interested in acquiring the services of the player as well. After having failed to adapt to Ligue 1, Faye has barely had any prominence under Jorge Sampaoli in his current team. However, this interest from the Bundesliga outfit could end up being beneficial for all involved parties.
While Leverkusen were reportedly interested in the player before as well, they seem more inclined to invest this time around. As per the same report, the price that will likely be considered could be around more than €12 million. This would, in turn, help Rennes recover their investment on a player who did not work out for them and could help Barcelona land an additional €3 million as well.
For La Blaugrana, that additional income could be useful for registrations or towards improving their Financial Fair Play situation. Either way, the deal in question is one that all involved parties can look at from a favorable lens.
For both Rennes and Barcelona, it signals the possibility of finding a positive financial solution, and for Leverkusen, it allows them to be better prepared when some of their defenders potentially leave in the summer.
However, if the German side manages to acquire the services of the 20-year-old defender, Barcelona will lose their currently active buy-back clause. Set at €25 million, it was placed by the Catalan club to safeguard the possibility to bringing the player back if he manages to exceed expectations over in France.
