Thiago, who left the club in 2013, has just one season remaining on his Bayern contract and is said to have has his heart set on a new challenge. That new challenge is widely expected to be at Liverpool but the Reds have so far failed to pay Bayern’s €30m asking price.

It seems Liverpool are waiting to sell players before making the signing. And that’s where Barcelona come in.

New boss Ronald Koeman is said to want Wijnaldum to bolster his midfield at Camp Nou. The Netherlands international is yet to agree a new deal at Anfield and could be sold this summer, with the Mirror claiming Liverpool want under €20m for him.

And Thiago has now piqued Barça’s interest instead.

The report claims a deal would be difficult, with the Spaniard said to be in advanced negotiations with Liverpool, and Koeman prefers a move for Wijnaldum anyway after working with him at international level.

Do Barcelona try to pursue Thiago, a homegrown player who would undoubtedly add class in midfield, or Wijnaldum, a player Koeman already knows well?

One way or another, one of the two players is likely to arrive at Camp Nou this summer, with the other set to line up in Jürgen Klopp’s Liverpool side.
