Barcelona’s injury list has continued to grow with Frenkie de Jong sustaining a hamstring injury, according to the club’s official Twitter page.
De Jong was initially in the Netherlands’ squad for their European Championship qualifiers but pulled out due to injury issues.
Just a day after Andreas Christensen suffered an injury with Denmark, Barca have now come up with worrying news on De Jong.
Christensen has reportedly been ruled out for up to three or four weeks, which will see him miss the Copa del Rey semi-final second-leg game against Real Madrid on April 6.
It remains to be seen whether De Jong will be available for El Clasico, with the Catalan giants already without Pedri and Ousmane Dembele, who remain sidelined.
The injury crisis has struck the Blaugrana at a critical time when they are in the quest for the La Liga title. The Catalan giants are 12 points clear at the top of the table.
De Jong’s potential absence will be a massive blow following his resurgence at Camp Nou this season.
The 25-year-old has put a turbulent summer behind him to gain manager Xavi’s confidence with his impressive performances.
Having produced top-notch displays in the back-to-back El Clasico wins, Xavi hailed De Jong as one of the best central midfielders in the world.
Sergi Roberto and Franck Kessie are expected to step up in De Jong’s absence, and they have already proven their worth by scoring in last week’s Clasico victory at Camp Nou.
