Barcelona president Joan Laporta has confirmed the club can make a deal for Spain winger Nico Williams ‘happen’ this summer.
Williams is on the wish list of several leading clubs after impressing for Spain at this summer’s European Championship.
The 21-year-old has caught the eye during La Roja’s run to the semi-finals of Euro 2024, where Luis de la Fuente’s team will take on France on Tuesday evening.
Williams’ exciting brand of football has complemented Barcelona winger Lamine Yamal with the national team and there has been heavy speculation that the Catalan club could look to unite the duo at club level.
The former has a release clause of around €50m (£43m) in his contract at Athletic Bilbao, a figure some deemed out of reach for Barcelona amid the club’s ongoing economic issues.
Laporta has confirmed that Barcelona have the finances to facilitate a deal, however, as the Spanish side look to beat significant competition from the Premier League to Williams.
“I like Nico, a lot. I can say that financially we can make it happen,” Laporta told Catalunya Radio.
“It’s result of work that has been done over all these years to reach this point. We could, of course, face a signing of this level.”
Williams scored eight goals and provided 19 assists in all competitions for Athletic Bilbao last summer, as the Spanish side ended a 40-year trophy drought with Copa del Rey success.
