Barcelona may be prioritising a move for Nico Williams at this stage, but they are still looking to bring in a new midfielder. A low-cost option is being looked for currently, given that Williams would be a big-money transaction for the Catalans.
Joshua Kimmich had been a top target, but his arrival looks complicated due to the high asking price Bayern Munich have set. As such, Mikel Merino has emerged as a more likely candidate to arrive at the Estadi Olimpic this summer, and according to Relevo, Barcelona are confident of securing a deal for an approximate fee of €20m.
Now that Euro 2024 is over, Merino’s future is expected to become clearer. He’s set to leave Real Sociedad, who are prepared to cash in because they do not foresee him signing a new contract – his current one ends in 2025.
Arsenal and Atletico Madrid are also showing interest in Merino, but Barcelona look to be favourites for now. Hansi Flick has approved a deal taking place, and although no moves have been made, they are expected soon. The player himself would welcome a transfer to Catalonia this summer.
