The most recent display from FC Barcelona was quite uncharacteristic from the team led by Hansi Flick. Normally, the German coach has his players set up quite effectively when it comes to dealing with unusual circumstances. This time around, however, Barcelona collapsed when it mattered most and ended up blowing a 2-0 lead to draw against Celta Vigo in what was a must-win game.
From Jules Kounde making some game-changing blunders to Marc Casado conceding a completely unnecessary red card, there were a lot of things that went wrong for Barcelona in a game where they simply could not afford to drop any points. Unfortunately, they ended up being fortunate not to suffer an outcome worse than a draw.
The result, however, reportedly left Hansi Flick furious with his team and the way in which they conducted themselves during the game. As highlighted by SPORT, the German coach’s fury then translated to a post-match team talk that took place in the locker room, and he was visibly upset as well.
After the game, Flick even offered his own opinion on how Barcelona played the game from start to finish. Despite going 2-0 up initially, the coach for La Blaugrana believes that his team had a poor game from the very beginning:
“Let’s be honest—it was a poor game. We don’t usually play like this, and we need to talk about it.”
This game now makes it the third occasion in La Liga on which FC Barcelona has dropped points this season. The first occasion was a loss against CA Osasuna, and then another defeat came at the hands of Real Sociedad just before the international break.
Now, this draw against Celta Vigo clearly highlights the team’s weaknesses and just how easily exploitable they are when specific circumstances arise. With this result, Barcelona put themselves in a complicated position in La Liga as Real Madrid will now look to close the gap between the two teams.
