Barcelona coach Ronald Koeman confirmed this morning that president Joan Laporta has explained why the club joined the Super League breakaway.

Barca and Real Madrid are now left carrying the can, with the remaining ten teams involved pulling out.

Koeman, ahead of Thursday's clash with Getafe, said: "I spoke yesterday with the president of the Super League. He explained to me the position of the club but after so much movement it is better not to comment. A lot has happened, a lot of teams have come out and what I want is the best for the club.

“I am not the spokesperson, I am not the president. My job is to prepare for the game. There is so much movement with this topic that we have to wait how this topic ends. I'm not surprised. We want the best for the club. If there is someone who should speak about this, it is clearly the president.

“The only thing I have said is that the president called me and explained it to me. I don't know what he said to the players but I'm only interested in tomorrow's game."

At the end of the press conference, he was asked again about his position as a person beyond being Barça coach and he limited himself to saying: "I agree with Piqué's tweet."

Barca defender Gerard Pique was critical of the Super League last night on social media.
