Any successful team, including various versions of FC Barcelona, have been hand-crafted by legendary coaches. The Catalan club, throughout its storied past, has been closely connected to the philosophies of the many coaches that have come and gone. However, for a coach to succeed at Barcelona, he must be given the right resources.

It is quite difficult to expect new coaches or managers to deliver perfect results with a squad that is not even of their choosing. However, unfortunately for Barcelona, the financial restrictions on the club prevent them from signing whoever they want and the availability of players is quite limited as it is.

While Hansi Flick accepted this challenge and has been quite respectful in terms of his agreement, there was one request that he believed was needed in his squad. That particular request was even seconded by both the coaching staff and the club’s management in terms of the positive impact it could have.

As highlighted by SPORT, that request was none other than to sign a more physical and intense defensive midfielder for the remainder of the season. One player who perfectly fit the requirements of Flick for that particular role was none other than Bayern Munich midfielder Leon Goretzka.

Having lost prominence at the German club this season and being a player who has prior experience with Hansi Flick himself, Goretzka was seen as a viable option. The idea would have been to bring him in on a loan until the end of the season, but it ended up being impossible for the club.

Firstly, due to their own financial limitations, Barcelona could not move for the player with the right resources to bring him in, and have even decided not to pursue any major acquisitions or make sales during the winter window as a direct consequence of said limitations. Secondly, due to the injury to João Palhinha, the German midfielder has become a more regular part of Vincent Kompany’s setup at Bayern once again and an exit could now be unlikely.

While Flick remains convinced with the quality of Marc Casado and has been pleased with his performances, his lack of options for rotation is worrying. For that reason, the Barcelona coach made the request that he did, even if it ended up being unfeasible for the club to manage and secure for him.
