There is no doubt that FC Barcelona are currently focusing on player contracts, knowing it is essential to retain the quality of the squad before they think about strengthening the pack during the summer transfer window.
The club recently renewed the contract of Sergi Roberto and it appears Sergio Busquets is next on the line, with his current deal at Camp Nou expiring at the end of the season.
Reports earlier this month suggested that Barcelona are set to propose a renewal offer for Busquets, which may include a substantial salary cut of 69%. The low offer fueled fears that Busquets might want to explore other options, including a move to Inter Miami.
Fabrizio Romano has now offered an update on the situation. The reliable transfer expert suggests Busquets has yet to reach any agreement with Inter Miami. Although the MLS outfit are determined to secure the services of the midfielder, their negotiations have not come to fruition just yet.
As things stand, Barcelona are expected to hand Busquets a new deal that will run until 2024. The renewal will be made at the request of Xavi and his coaching staff, who rate the player highly and believe his presence in the team could be integral in the club’s progress.
However, Busquets is not expected to hurry his decision. He will take his time, as the Spaniard has other offers on the table, including proposals from Saudi Arabian giants Al Nassr, who made headlines by securing the services of Cristiano Ronaldo earlier in the year.
Barcelona, though, have already started making contingency plans. They are in line to make a move for Ilkay Gundogan of Manchester City, while Dani Parejo has emerged as an alternative. The club may even look to sign both players as their respective contracts expire in the coming summer.
