Barcelona midfielder Frenkie de Jong has finally addressed the growing speculation surrounding his future at the club.

In an interview with VZ (h/t SPORT), the Dutch international made it clear that his intention is to stay at Barcelona and extend his contract, which currently runs until 2026.

“I think I’m going to renew for Barça,” De Jong stated, although he did add a small note of caution. “I can’t be one hundred percent sure, but if everything goes well, it will be done.

“My intention is to renew this summer, but we will see what happens. It is a negotiation and you can’t say exactly when. The important thing is that both parties want it, and I think we will reach an agreement.”

Reflecting on market speculation

There have been reports that De Jong is trying to cut ties with his current agent, a figure who has often been a major obstacle in talks with Barcelona in the past.

When asked directly about it, the midfielder said, “I can’t talk about my agent. I can’t say anything about that now. Right now, I’m focused on the national team, and then we’ll see.”

De Jong also reflected on his performances this season, claiming that although he did not feel he was much better than in previous campaigns, winning more matches and trophies helped shine a bigger light on his contribution.

“Before I got injured, I was in the best moment of my game,” he said.

“I don’t think this year I did much better than the previous ones, but the titles we have won and the victories have given more visibility to my game.”

On UCL defeat and Yamal’s Ballon d’Or candidacy

He admitted the Champions League elimination against Inter was one of the low points of the season.

“It hurt a lot to lose against Inter. We were so close to the final and failing like that was painful. PSG deserved the title this year,” De Jong commented.

The Dutchman also praised Barcelona wonderkid Lamine Yamal and supported his Ballon d’Or candidacy.

“That trophy isn’t decided by just one match or a title. It’s about the full season. There’s no doubt that Lamine is a special talent and deserves recognition.”

De Jong’s public statement is a clear signal that, despite rumours of a potential exit, his heart is still in Barcelona.

Now, fans will be waiting to see if a new contract agreement is reached in the coming weeks, possibly one that will reduce his current wage and help the club with Financial Fair Play regulations.
