A headline member of the breakthrough crop of young talent at La Liga giants Barcelona came close to departing the club for a heavily cut-price fee last year.

That’s according to Mundo Deportivo, citing Polish journalist Tomasz Włodarczyk, who point towards Fermín López as the player in question.

Midfielder Fermín has of course enjoyed a breakout campaign in Barcelona to date, exploding onto the first-team scene following a year on loan with Linares.

All told, the 20-year-old has racked up 37 appearances across all competitions, notching a none-too-shabby eight goals along the way.

His most recent came this past Monday, when Fermín guided home a gorgeous header, to open the scoring in Barca’s La Liga victory over Valencia.

And yet, as alluded to above, had things played out just a little differently, the midfield starlet could have found himself plying his trade far from Catalunya’s capital this season.

As per the aforementioned MD, last year, Fermín was mere details away from being sold to Polish outfit Raków Częstochowa.

A deal worth a measly €600,000 was in place between the respective boards at Raków and Barcelona, only for a change in technical staff at the former to see the transfer collapse at the last.

Safe to say, those behind the scenes at the Camp Nou will no doubt be breathing a collective sigh of relief right about now…
