After a bright start in which Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Ousmane Dembélé were both denied by outstanding saves from Thibaut Courtois, the Blaugrana deservedly hit the front just before the half-hour mark.

It came via Aubameyang’s eighth goal of the season as he nipped between both Real centre-backs to crash home a header, with Courtois then called into action again moments later to keep him from adding a second, which became a theme throughout.

But Barcelona did double their lead when Ronald Araújo, picked at right-back over Dani Alves, made his presence felt in the area from a corner, steering a low header into the back of the net for a 2-0 half-time lead, which saw the home side whistled off by a furious home support.

Things got worse moments after the restart when, after Ferran Torres had missed a glorious chance when played through on goal with only the ‘keeper to beat, he curled wide but quickly made up for that by slamming home after Aubameyang found him with a delightful flick.

The Gabon international then made it four with a classy chip following a VAR check as the jeers reached a deafening level around a stunned Bernabéu.

Courtois was again called upon to make further saves to stop things getting further out of hand as Barcelona move up to third with the win and despite the chastening loss, Real remain nine points clear of Sevilla atop the table.
