Lionel Messi opened the scoring midway through the first half when he found the bottom corner with a clean strike on the volley.

It was soon 2-0, with Pedri finishing off a slick move involving Messi and Ousmane Dembélé.

But the hosts pulled a goal back early in the second half when Gonzalo Melero met José Luis Morales’s with a firm header past Marc-André ter Stegen.

Just two minutes later Levante stunned Barça with an equaliser, as scorer turned provider when Morales drilled a shot into the far corner.

Barça then went back in front when Antoine Griezmann’s turn on the edge of the box rolled into Dembélé’s path, and the Frenchman rifled an effort into the top corner for 3-2.

But the drama wasn’t done there, as in the dying minutes Sergio Leon smashed in at Ter Stegen’s near post to make it 3-3.

This result leaves Ronald Koeman’s side second on 76 points after 36 games played. Leaders Atlético Madrid (77 points), third placed Real Madrid (75) and fourth placed Sevilla (71) all have a game in hand.

Levante, meanwhile, are up to 13th.
