Barcelona were dealt an unexpected setback ahead of their potential title-clinching match against Espanyol, as Ferran Torres was ruled out for the remainder of the season after undergoing emergency surgery for appendicitis.

The Spanish forward, who was a strong contender to start in the derby tonight, was rushed into surgery last night, effectively ending his 2024/25 campaign.

The surgery took place at the Hospital de Barcelona and was carried out by doctors Coroleu and Borras, under the close supervision of the club’s medical staff.

Fortunately, the operation was successful, and Ferran took to Instagram this morning to reassure fans, writing:

“Appendicitis overcome!! It’s time to support the team tonight from here to be champions of La Liga!” His post reflects the fighting spirit that has come to define his season.

Abrupt absence amid top form

Ferran’s absence will certainly be felt. This has been the best season of his professional career, with the forward having made 45 appearances, scoring 19 goals and registering 7 assists across all competitions.

His form this year has been a revelation, particularly under Hansi Flick, and he has often been the difference-maker in tight matches.

His standout performances include a memorable hat-trick of assists in El Clasico against Real Madrid, a game that underscored just how far he has come since his early struggles at the club.

With three games still left in La Liga, Barcelona now face the challenge of finishing the season without one of their most effective attackers.

While the team remains favourites to secure the league title, potentially even tonight with a win over Espanyol, Flick will now need to rely on other options like Raphinha, Lamine Yamal and Robert Lewandowski to fill the void left by Ferran’s untimely absence.
