Barcelona vice-president Jordi Mestre says the club were left “surprised and upset” by Gerard Piqué’s involvement in a documentary in which Antoine Griezmann revealed he would be staying at Atlético Madrid.

Griezmann had been strongly linked with a move to Camp Nou this summer but the Frenchman announced on Friday that he would be staying put via a short film produced by Piqué’s production company Kosmos.

On Monday, Griezmann signed a new contract which will keep him at the Wanda Metropolitano until 2023, and Barça say they respect the player’s decision.

“We have told Piqué that his participation [in the documentary] has surprised and upset the club and the supporters,” said Mestre at the presentation of former Blaugrana player Eric Abidal as the club’s new sporting director on Tuesday.

“We respect Griezmann’s decision to sign a new contract with Atlético as we respect any player’s decision about their future. We want players who are committed to Barca and who want to succeed here.

“But we regret that the club’s members were disillusioned by the way things were conducted and the broadcasting of the final decision.

“We’re are going to speak with Piqué internally and we won’t make any more comments in public about this.”
