Barcelona announcement on €40m asset sale imminent – report

Barcelona are on the verge of announcing a deal to sell part of Libero‘s 29.5% stake in Barca Vision, for which they are yet to be paid. The non-payment has left a €40m hole in the Blaugrana accounts, but the latest is that an agreement could be imminent to find that money.

According to RAC1, as quoted by MD, Barcelona could announce the sale of a stake in Barca Vision for €40m after a board meeting on Thursday afternoon, presumably with the board needing to ratify the sale. If that goes through, then it would be vital for Barcelona to get closer to being within their salary limit, and being able to sign without restrictions on what they could spend.

Equally, they go on to say that President Joan Laporta is also working on a second deal with another unnamed firm from the United States. That deal would be for another stake in Barca Vision, and would be worth €60m – it’s worth noting that the same quantity is due from the current holders of the Barca Vision stakes on the 30th of June, but clearly looks unlikely to come in.

Even if the sale does go through, there will be cautiousness attached to it. Haven’t already failed to secure the money from two of their investors, this would be a third sale of the same asset in two years, suggesting that it is more likely than not to cause them issues down the line. Barcelona fans will hope that Laporta has learned his lesson to choose his partners more carefully, but equally the president may feel he is without much choice.
