Barcelona and Samuel Umtiti have reached an agreement for the mutual termination of the defender’s contract at the club.

The Frenchman’s deal was set to run for three more seasons until the end of the 2025/26 campaign but both sides have decided it is best to end his time at the club now.

Having signed for Barça in 2016 from Lyon, Umtiti became a key player for Los Cules, partnering Gerard Pique at centre back to great effect in his first two seasons.

Following the 2018 World Cup, in which he was again a key player in France’s win, Umtiti was blighted by a series of knee injuries which greatly reduced his playing time.

He spent last season on loan at Lecce, making 25 appearances for the Serie A club, and he may well return there now on a permanent transfer.
