The future of Barcelona midfielder Monchu Rodriguez is up in the air.

Monchu spent last season on-loan with Girona, which had the option to buy him outright if they had won promotion.

RAC1 reports Monchu's camp understand that Girona's failure to win promotion to La Liga (they lost in the playoff final to Rayo Vallecano) means he is a free agent now.

It's worth pointing out that Girona had to pay Barça €3.5 million to keep Monchu if they went up. As they haven't been promoted, and as they did not inform Barça before the middle of June of their intention to keep him, Monchu considers himself without a club.

Barça maintain that a clause exists that means they still own his rights for another two years, but the player's agents, the company Wasserman, allege that is not the case and the solution to this contact is unknown.
