Barcelona and Lionel Messi have opened new contract talks.

The Argentine great's current contract will expire at the end of June. However, despite his situation and constant speculation around his future, Messi has never considered entering pre-contract talks with any European rival. Courtesy of his Bosman status, Messi has been free to negotiate pre-contract terms with any European club outside of Spain since January 1.

Sport says negotiations have now formally kicked off between Barca's new management team and Messi's camp.

The Blaugrana president, Joan Laporta, and the player's father and representative, Jorge Messi, have held various conversations in recent days.

The final offer, both financial and in terms of the sports project, will be subject, however, to the result of the exhaustive audit that the club is undergoing.

In these first rounds of negotiations between Laporta and Jorge Messi, the foundations of the agreement are being laid.

Details are yet to be tabled, but progress is being made around a lifetime deal which would extend beyond Messi's playing days.
