Marcus Rashford remains in a state of limbo, having been exiled from the squad at Manchester United by manager Ruben Amorim.
Barcelona are interested in signing the 27-year-old on loan but are not in a position to make a move until a player is sold as they need to free up salary space.
With Ansu Fati unwilling to leave and Andreas Christensen’s injury ruling out an exit, the chances of the move going through appear slim, given that not much time is left before the transfer window closes.
Now, The Telegraph (h/t SPORT), Barcelona and Manchester United have begun negotiations regarding the loan of Marcus Rashford, just five days before the close of the transfer window.
The two clubs are in talks through the player’s brother and agent, Dwaine Maynard, with the goal of reaching an agreement complicated by the forward’s high salary.
Manchester United want to save Rashford’s wages, while Barcelona have made it clear that they can only cover up to 50 per cent of what the player is owed until June.

Currently, the talks revolve around a loan with no option to buy, with the primary point of discussion being the player’s salary. This is an effort to advance the negotiations and avoid rushing through the deal in the final hours of the transfer window.
Barcelona are interested in Rashford, but at present, they do not have the financial flexibility to bring him in.
However, potential departures of youth academy players to clubs in the Arab world and the possible transfer of ex-star Mika Marmol to Roma – with Barcelona holding a 50 per cent stake in the deal – could free up the necessary financial room.
Rashford is clear about his desire to play for Hansi Flick’s team and is not considering any other move in this January transfer window.
Despite receiving a lucrative offer from Saudi Arabia, Rashford has firmly rejected any move there.
His options are to either join Barcelona or stay at Manchester United and try to rebuild his relationship with Amorim. There is a possibility he could spend the rest of the season on the bench, but he seems willing to take that risk.
The major uncertainty for both Rashford and the Red Devils is whether Barcelona will be able to register the player before the transfer window slams shut on February 3.
