Barcelona are closing in on England midfielder Keira Walsh after agreeing a world record transfer fee with Manchester City.

The Spanish champions are set to pay €400k for Walsh, the most ever paid for a player in the women’s game.

Walsh starred for England as the Lionesses won the European Championships in the summer. Playing at the base of the midfield, Walsh started every game and was named Player of the Match in the 2-1 final win over Germany at a sold-out Wembley.

The news that a fee had been agreed was claimed by Sport in Spain late on Wednesday, with the Telegraph in the UK later corroborating the report.

Manchester City have already lost Lucy Bronze to Barcelona this summer, with fellow first team regular Caroline Weir heading to Real Madrid. Another star midfielder left with Georgia Stanway signing for Bayern Munich, while striker Ellen White announced her retirement as a player last month.

The sale of Walsh will add further question marks for City, who recently lost a Champions League qualifying tie to Real Madrid, with the start of the new WSL season now just days away.
